Sikh Rehat Maryada

What five not to be associated with?

Five that a Sikh should not associate with, as guided by the Sikh Rehat Maryada.

  1. 1 Tobacco and drug users

Individuals who consume tobacco or any form of drugs are to be avoided.

  2. 2 Female infanticide

Condemning those who commit the grave sin of killing their daughters at birth:

“Major sins include the killing of a Brahmgyani, a cow, killing or selling your daughter, and eating from a person lacking moral discipline. Committing any of these acts is akin to committing thousands of sins, and such egotistical individuals will face severe reprimand repeatedly.”SGGSJ Ang 1413

“Those who kill their daughters or marry them to those who cut their hair are punishable.”Rehatnama Bhai Deya Singh Ji
  3. 3 Those who sell their daughters

Individuals who engage in receiving money for their daughters' marriages or accept dowries are to be shunned.

  4. 4 Hair cutting

Individuals who cut or completely shave hair from their head or face are not in adherence with Sikh practices.

  5. 5 Excommunication notice

On June 30, 1978, a Hukamnama from Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib officially excommunicated groups like Narakdharees/Fake Nirankaris, among others.

Groups claiming their leaders as the Guru and not accepting Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the supreme Guru, such as Radha Soamis, Namdharis, Noormehlie, Bhaniarawale and Sacha Sodha Vale, should not be associated with, married into, or dined with. However, if members of these groups take Amrit from Panj Pyare, adhere to the Khalsa Rehat, and accept Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their Guru, they can be embraced as brothers and sisters in the community.
