It is believed that the tradition of Nagar Kirtan was initiated by Baba Buddha Ji during the time when Siri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was detained in Jahangir's Gwalior Jail for 40 days. Unable to bear the separation from Siri Guru Ji, Baba Ji led the Sangat to Gwalior where they performed Nagar Kirtan around the jail as a gesture of their devotion and love for Siri Guru Ji.
